Wildcats Are UIL District Runners UP
CSHS Wildcat UIL Team Wins Runner Up Plaque and Qualifies Twenty
Competitors to Regionals
Congratulations to the Wildcat UIL Academic for winning the 29-4A
UIL District Runner Up plaque. Carrizo
Springs hosted the UIL 29-4A District Meet on March 22 and 23 where the
Wildcats won enough points to capture the 2nd place plaque, bested
only by Devine. During the process, the
Wildcats qualified twenty competitors to the UIL Regional Meet which will take
place in Corpus Christi on April 7 and 8.
The team started the accumulation of points when the UIL CX
Debate team won points on February 1 in Devine. Then the One-Act Play company
advanced to B-District on March 10.
After that, the rest of the academic team took its turn. On March 22, the LD Debaters, the Computer
Science Team, the Ready Writers, and the Journalism team competed and racked up
more points for the team. On March 23
the rest of the events were held at Carrizo Springs High School and the
Wildcats did not disappoint.
The team captured five individual district event
championships, two team championships, and numerous top six placements. With
their outstanding showing, the Wildcats advanced twenty competitors to the UIL
Regional Meet. Congratulations to these fine
competitors and their coaches on an outstanding performance. The following include the individual results
of the exceptional competitors of Wildcat UIL.
In Calculator
Applications Gift Owolabi won Calculator
Apps. Champion followed by teammate Victor Doria who won second place and Jazmine
Velasquez won third place and Josh Velasquez sixth place. The team of Victor, Gift and Josh won Calculator Apps. Team Champions. In
Computer Science Brianna Cardenas won third plalce, Adamari Sanchez fifth place,
Josh Velasquez sixth place and Regina Hernandez. The team of Brianna, Adamari, Josh, and
Regina won second place team in Computer
Science. In Computer Applications Tianna Solis won third place, Jazlynn
Solis won fourth place and Elizabeth Alejandro won eighth place. In Editorial Writing Maria Guadalupe
Selgado won third place, Maria Isabel Selgado fourth place, and Lydia Rios won
fifth place. In Feature Writing Maria Guadalupe Selgado won fifth place. In Headline
Writing Maria Guadalupe Selgado won third place. In News
Writing Lydia Rios won second place while Maria Guadalupe Selgado won sixth
place. Lydia Rios, Maria Guadalupe
Selgado, Maria Isabel Selgado, and Nadia Riojas won second place Journalism Team. In Ready Writing Julianna Vargas won
second place and Juan Oyervides won fourth place. In Literary Criticism Christina Janca won fourth, Taylor McNeal sixth
place and Brianna Decker-Diaz 9th place. The team of Christina, Taylor and Brianna won
second place Literary Criticism Team. In Mathematics
Gift Owolabi won Mathematics Champion,
while teammate Victor Doria won second place, Jazmine Velasquez won tenth place
and Josh Velasquez won fifteenth place.

Team Champions. In Number Sense Gift Owolabi won Number Sense Champion while teammates Victor Doria won fourth place, Jazmine
Velasquez won seventh place and Josh Velasquez won ninth place. Gift, Victor, Jazmine, and Josh won second
place Number Sense Team and won the wildcard team to Regionals. In Science
Victor Doria won fourth place, Josh Velasquez won ninth place and Bernice
Gonzalez won eighteenth place. Victor,
Josh, and Bernice won third place Science
Team. In Social Studies Micaela
Uriegas won fourth place, Annika Uriegas ninth place, Michael Uriegas eleventh place
and A.J. Rodriguez won fourteenth place. Micaela, Annika, Michael and A.J. won third
place Social Studies Team. In Current Issues and Events Annika
Uriegas won fourth place, Micahel Uriegas won sixth place, Brianna Decker-Diaz
won seventh place, and David Gomez won eighth place. In Spelling and Vocabulary Miguel
Valdez won seventh place, Galilea Barrera ninth place, and A.J. Rodriguez
eighteenth place. In Lincoln-Douglas Debate Isabella
Talamantez won third place, Micaela Uriegas fourth place and Ginger Sifuentez
won fifth place. In Informative Speaking
Elysandra Solis won fourth place and Micaela Uriegas won fourth place. In
Persuasive Speaking Lois Owolabi won
second place while Isabela Talamantez won third place and Jordan Guerrero
fourth place. In Poetry Interpretation Lois Owolabi won Poetry Interpretation Champion, Ryan Garcia won second place and Christina
Janca won third place. In Prose Interpretation Juan Oyervides won
Prose Interpretation Champion,
Jozlin Perez fifth place and Meagan Garcia sixth place. The teams of CX Debate, LD Debate,
Informative and Persuasive Speaking, Prose and Poetry Interpretation won the
overall second place Speech Team.

Valerio, Brian Byars, Cristina Criel, Ruben Z. Escamilla, Rachel Garza, Victoria
Linnard, Olga Mireles, Reynaldo Rodriguez, Marisa Tobias, Lucinda Paulino. In addition, thank you once again to our UIL coaches
and feeder programs at C.S. Elementary, C.S. Intermediate, and C.S. Junior High
who at one time or another coached or helped these young people excel in UIL. Thank you especially to Mrs. Villarreal who
has totally supported Ms. Mireles and all our UIL coaches with her assistance
and cooperation. In addition, thanks to Principals Talamantez and Martinez.
The Wildcat UIL team members would like to thank and share outstanding
performance with their UIL support team who work hard behind the scenes to help
them with their success: Michelle
Gonzalez, CSHS Principal; Alejandro Chapa and Maribel Guevara, Asst.
Principals; Gene Gutierrez Transportation Director and his staff; Michael Uriegas,
HR Director and his staff; Anna-Rocha Diaz, Executive Director and business

well-wishers who follow and support the UIL team, the staff of The Carrizo

have offered or contributed their help, or have attended the meets or OAP
performances--a very special thanks to all.
Mr. Ruben Z. Escamilla, UIL Academic Director, would like to
give special thanks to the parents of these exceptional young people for
allowing them to share their talents in UIL academics. In addition, Mr.
Escamilla would like to thank all who contributed to a smooth and successful
hosting of the UIL Academic District Meet. Special thanks to Mr. Jeff Janca and
the staff of the First Baptist Church, Sandra Little, Ashton Escamilla-Ponce,
and Sgt. Rodriguez and ROTC cadets, who were available to help and contribute
from the first day of planning the meet—your help to a successful meet was
invaluable. Last but not least thank you to all the CSHS faculty and staff who
contributed their time to help.
