They went to
compete and finished as champions.
The Wildcat
UIL Calculator Applications team made up of Gift Owolabi, Victor Doria, Jazmine
Velasquez, and Josh Velasquez won front row seats to the “Big Show”.
The UIL
State Meet in Austin is one of the toughest interscholastic competitions in the
country where the best of the best in academics, music, and athletics go to
compete.
The team
competed at the UIL Regional meet in Corpus Christi and won Calculator
Applications Regional Champions.
Leading the
pack was Gift Owolabi who won Calculator Applications Champion by winning first
place, followed by teammate Victor Doria who captured second place, then
followed by Jazmine Velasquez, and brother Josh Velasquez.
Their coach,
Daniel Valerio Jr., is very proud, but admits there’s still work to be done to
get ready for the state competition.
“These young
ladies and gentlemen put in the time and the hard work into this great accomplishment,”
said Valerio. “I always tell my competitors “If someone beats you, it’s because
they worked harder. It’s not over—there is still a tougher road ahead, but
these fine youngsters are up for the challenge.”
The Wildcat
UIL program has been blessed with so many talented students who have made the
trek to the state meet and have continued a tradition of excellence.
Several states are doing everything they can
to emulate this important organization which promotes “excellence through
competition.” Students and coaches
involved in any of these three UIL programs can tell you that it is not an easy
task to advance from district to the regional meet, much less to the state
competition. This is why it is vital that well-deserved recognition is given to
those that advance to this level.
