Wildcat UIL Speech Team Competes in Karnes City

On December 13, the Wildcat UIL Speech Team traveled to Karnes City to compete in the "Gift of Speech" tournament. The Cross-Examination Debate team of Annie Hollander and Alex Doria won the quarter-finals medallions after four tough rounds of policy debate.  In Prose Interpretation Valerie Mata read two of her literary selections through three rounds to win the 5th place medallion in the overall finals.  In Lincoln-Douglas Debate newcomer Mia Tapia won the quarter-finals medallion after her four grueling rounds of value-based debate.

Wildcat UIL Competes at James Madison Tournament

At the Madison tournament, the social studies team won the second place medals. Joseph Arias led the team with an individual placement of second place. Joseph was followed by teammates Hailey Alaniz who won 8th place and D.J. Ramirez who won 9th place. In Computer Applications Erica Garcia won the 8th place award. In Journalism Alyssa Vargas won the 3rd place trophy.

CSHS WILDCAT UIL WINS 3RD OVERALL AT LAREDO MEET

Congratulations to the Wildcat UIL Academic Team that captured the third place sweepstakes trophy at the Laredo United UIL Tournament which took place on November 15 & 16..  A total team effort and a surge at the end helped to catapult the UIL team to 3rd place and edge out LBJ High School.  Power house Laredo Alexander and United South High School placed 1st and 2nd respectively.  Congratulations to all participants and coaches who worked hard to produce a good showing on the first full meet of the season.

Travel Information for United HS Tournament -Nov. 15 & 16


All UIL students and coaches who will be traveling on Friday, Nov. 15 to the United Laredo Meet need report to the high school by 1:30 p.m.  The bus will depart promptly at 2:00 p.m.
Reminder:  This is an overnight trip for this particular group of students. 

All UIL students and coaches who will be traveling on Saturday, Nov. 16 to the United HS tournament in Laredo need to be at the high school no later than 5: 45 a.m.  The bus will leave promptly at 6:00 a.m.  Dress warmly as it is predicted to be cold.

Annie Hollander Speaks at UT Austin

Congratulations to Annie Hollander who was invited to speak at the UIL Student Activities Conference at The University of Texas at Austin. Annie is a 2013 UIL State Finalist in Extemporaneous Persuasive Speaking. Jana Riggins, UIL Speech Director, extended an invitation to Annie to present a demonstration of her event at the prestigious UIL conference. In her invitation Riggins said, “Allow me to extend my sincere congratulations upon your success at the 2013 UIL State Meet. Your accomplishments in competitive speech will not only be a highlight of your high school career, but certainly will play a significant role in your success later in life.”

While at the conference Annie had an opportunity to demonstrate an extemporaneous speech in front of students and coaches from different parts of Texas—this was the largest crowd in front of which Annie has performed. After her demonstration Annie entertained questions from the audience and offered pointers on how to be successful in Extemporaneous Speaking. Her coach, Mr. Margarito Ayala said he received many wonderful comments on Annie’s performance.

“Ms. Hollander has certainly made Carrizo Springs High School and her community proud. Carrizo Springs should be very proud that it continues to make its presence known by sending us such excellent academic UIL students each year,” said one UIL official. Thank you to UIL coaches Mr. D. Valerio and Ms. Lucinda Galvan for accompanying Annie on her trek to Austin.

CSHS UIL Academic Participants Travel to UT Austin

The Wildcat UIL Academic Team traveled to The University of Texas at Austin in order to attend the annual UIL Student Activities Conference.  This annual gathering of academic minds is designed to hone the skills of UIL students from all over Texas.  There were over one-hundred sessions that featured lectures and presentations by UIL contest directors, college professors and high school teachers. Sessions included discussions on contest preparation, demonstrations, performances and contest administration.
The Wildcat UIL students and coaches traveled to this conference in order to improve their academic skills and to prepare for the upcoming season.  “This conference will hopefully not only sharpen the skills of our veteran students, but also prime our beginning students with some important information that they will need to be successful—we have a lot of new young talent and we are very excited about that,” said Ruben Escamilla, UIL Academic Director.
