Congratulations to Lois Owolabi who has received the UIL TILF (Texas Interscholastic League Foundation) Scholarship.  Thousands of senior UIL competitors across the state apply for this very prestigious scholarship.  Lois is the 2017 Salutatorian of her graduating class.  “Lois was definitely an integral part of our UIL academic program.  She certainly deserves this honor,” said Ruben Escamilla, UIL Director.  During her time in the UIL program, Lois was involved in Poetry Interpretation, CX Debate, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Math.  She received many awards and accolades:  She was CX District Debate Champion twice and was Top Speaker in 2016.  She was Poetry District Champion three times and advanced to regionals all four of her high school years in several events.  She competed at the state level in Poetry Interpretation and ended up 4th in the state of Texas.  “Ms. Owolabi certainly exemplifies what is best about the UIL program and has obviously brought honor and pride to her school and community,” said a UIL spokesman.

During a typical academic year, TILF will disburse more than $1 million to more than 600 students UIL academic/one-act play and music students attending colleges and universities throughout Texas. TILF awarded 351 new and 217 renewed scholarships in 2017.

The TILF has over $11 million in endowed funds and receives direct scholarship grants each year of more than $800,000 from foundations, individuals and corporate sponsors throughout the state. TILF anticipates disbursing over $1.1 million during the 2017-18 academic year.

The University Interscholastic League Academic Program is designed to promote the kind of intellectual environment and critical thinking that prepares students for college, the workforce and a changing and complex future. Each year, more than a half million students participate in UIL academic events. These activities help students develop a strong foundation of knowledge and scholastic skills, including intellectual agility and adaptability.

We encourage students to join the UIL program and the tradition of Wildcat UIL academic excellence that Lois Owolabi and countless past and present students continue to keep alive.  Awesome Wildcat Brain Power!
